Preston Manor School is a notable HA9 education facility. It was established in 1938 as Preston Manor County Grammar School. The first headmaster W.P. Bannister served until 1963. In 1993, the school became a Technology College. It was among the first schools that became specialist Science Colleges in 2002. Science and Math results are above the national average. In 2006, the GSCE and Post 16 results placed it among the top schools in the UK. The Secretary of State and members of the Department for Education and Skills visited the school. In 2013, it gained academy status.
Scientist Raymond Gosling is one of the notable people who attended Preston Manor County Grammar School. He is the one who took Photo 51, the X-ray image that allowed Watson and Crick to determine the structure of the DNA. Criminal justice reformer Una Padel, singer Mari Wilson, footballer Darren Currie, footballer and coach Junior Lewis, comedian Remi Gaillard, scholar Barbara Bray, hammer thrower Mike Ellis, keyboardist Andrew Pryce Jackman, and Open University professor Garry Slapper are other notable former alumni. Preston Community Library on Carlton Avenue East hosts various classes such as computer and English and also activities such as yoga. Preston Pub opposite the library is a favorite place where locals gather to enjoy a beer and genuine British cooking.
Jewish Free School (JFS) was at one point the world’s largest Jewish school. It was founded in 1732. Notable former pupils include comedian Ian Stone, musician Joe Loss, actress Gina Bellman, politician Barbara Roche, footballer Dean Furman, and Ray Kelvin the founder of clothing company Ted Baker. Preston Park is a local attraction for North West London residents. It features a play area for kids and sports zones. Comedian Lolly Adefope who also appeared in Sick Note, Josh, and Plebs sitcom is a notable resident. John Lyon the founder of Harrow School lived at Preston Hall.
