A 1435 document mentions Northwood as Northwode. The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon words “north” and “wode” and it means “the wood in the north”. In the 13th century, Bec Abbey monks owned Northwood Grange. The monks lived at Manor Farm in nearby Ruislip. The 1565 national survey conducted by King’s College mentions 10 cottages and some farms in the area. The Holy Trinity Church was built in the 18th century. In 1841, there were 41 people living here. Forty years later, the number grew to 257 people in 62 houses. In 1887, David Carnegie the owner of the Eastbury Park Estate sold the land to Frank Carew who began housing development.

Architect Sir Frank Elgood designed the 1904 Emmanuel Church. The construction dates from 1895. Its original purpose was education. Northwood and Pinner Cottage Hospital honors the victims of World War I. The local tube station serves this part of North West London since 1887. The station car park took place of the goods depot in 1966.

Actress Kathleen Byron spent the last years of her life in Northwood. She played in numerous TV series and movies such as Saving Private Ryan and Perfect Strangers. Scientist Louis Harold Gray who made contributions in the area of radiobiology is another former resident. Singer Elena Tonra of indie band Daughter grew up here. Actor Geoffrey Keen, actress Betty Marsden, actress Patsy Smart, and actor David Quilter are other people associated with the area. Northwood Cricket Club is a Saracens Hertfordshire Premier League club that was established more than 100 years ago. Northwood F.C football club was founded in 1926.
