This KT8 area is part of the old Elmbridge hundred. The town of East Molesey together with West Molesey forms the suburban district Molesey. The prefixes East and West are used starting with the 13th century. The settlement grew around East Molesey. The Domesday Book records this area as Molesham and has two entries referring to the East and West towns. The 1968 Thames flooding affected this area. Hampton Court Palace is one of the local landmarks. It was built in the 16th century for cardinal Thomas Wolsey. As Wolsey fell from favor, King Henry VIII took over the palace. It became one of his favorite residences. The building was used as a filming location for Pirates of the Caribbean, Sherlock Holmes, and Disney’s live-action movie Cinderella.
East Molesey Cricket Club opened in 1871, however, cricket has been played in this part of South West London since the 18th century.
