West Tilbury is a town that sits on top of and flanked by a 98-foot (30-meter) large river terrace that overlooks the River Thames. Portion of the present-day Tilbury district (which also includes portion of Tilbury Fort) is located within the old village of West Tilbury.
The most famous heritage building in the area is Tilbury Fort, an artillery fort that controls the narrow channel of the River Thames. Other notable landmarks include the late 17th-century Manor Farm (The Farm House as it is called today), West Tilbury Hall, Polwicks at Low Street and Condovers (currently Walnut Tree Cottage).
Notable people associated with West Tilbury include Victorian-era English painter Emily Mary Osborn, diarist and soldier Ernest Achey Loftus and author Gervase of Tilbury. One of the most notorious highwaymen in Great Britain, John Nevison (aka William Nevison), was also from the area.
